We are very excited to announce a special live-streamed Zoom seminar class taught by Terhi Kallonen Sensei this Saturday, July 25th at 12 pm CDT (19:00 CET!)

Register to receive the Zoom link for the seminar class.

The proceeds from the seminar will go to support Terhi Sensei and NOLA Aikido as we continue to bring this practice into the world.

About Terhi Sensei

I’m Terhi Kallonen from Finland, Aikidoka since 1981. I practice in Meido-Kan Aikido Dojo in Helsinki, and I follow the Endo Shihan lineage. I have a background in yoga, mindfulness, and occupational therapy, so I’m used to studying body control, dominances in movement, and ergonomics. These create our more or less functional patterns in movement, and we need to make use of some degree of consciousness if we want to change something. Being a smaller woman also motivates me to find alternatives to using muscle power (which I often try to use anyway.)

Class Description

I will not be teaching classic Aikido (so no keiko gi’s necessary) but will cover some basic elements which in my experience help us when studying Aikido. I have started calling these ‘letters,’ whereas techniques could be called ‘words.’  My focus in Aikido is on our interactions, and in solo practice this means listening to oneself.  In this class, we will study how to use our hara (the center of our body mass), midline/axis, balls of the feet, as well as the the 7th vertebra in the neck.

What to Bring to Class

I will be using some equipment, so please have these with you if possible. If
not, just improvise. They can provide some weight and help you to better feel your
own body.  Please see the photo above.

Please bring a jo if you have one, or a bokken or a broom stick. (We will not be doing classic jo practice.)  If you will be practicing in a room like me, you can use a shorter jo-like thing such as a spatula, which you can hold with both hands.  I will have a cardboard roll.

A chair with a back would be wonderful. If you have a low step have it handy. Please also bring a small towel.

That’s it.

Beginners are warmly welcome.

We look forward to practicing with you on Saturday!

Please share this email with any and all you think might like to attend.

Thank you!
