Key to the Classes
Adult Classes
AIKIDO (BASICS): Beginners are welcome to attend any of our general classes, but are encouraged to begin by attending a few of our basics classes before starting to attend both the basics and the general classes. In the Basics classes you will get a solid foundation in ukemi (the art of falling safely), Aikido movement patterns, Aikido etiquette, and basic Aikido techniques.
AIKIDO (GENERAL): Open to and suitable for all levels, these classes include meditation, stretching, chi gong (breathing exercises), Aikido exercises and techniques, as well as freer practice. Senior students will always be on hand to help newer students in these and all of our classes.
BOKKEN/JO/IAIDO: Practice with Bokken (wooden sword), Jo (wooden staff), as well as Iaido (the meditative art of drawing the sword). These practices relate directly to the movements and principles of Aikido and can be very helpful in learning the empty-handed forms.
You are welcome to come observe a class at any time. Your first class is free. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes so you can move freely. And please arrive fifteen minutes before the start of class to fill out a little paperwork. We look forward to welcoming you to our dojo!
Children's Classes
PEACEFUL SAMURAIS: For our youngest children, beginning around age 4. Helps students learn to use their bodies in fun, interactive ways. Movement, breathing, stretching, and balance are all developed in the context of games.
PEACEFUL NINJAS: For young children, beginning around age 7. Introduces students to classical Aikido in a step-by-step fashion in accord with the abilities and emotional maturity of those involved. Through connection studies and grounded movement, students learn that yielding can be powerful and that gentleness can be strong.
PEACEFUL WARRIORS: For older children, beginning around age 10. Continues the practice of principles and techniques of classical Aikido with an emphasis on the development of communicative competence, emotional intelligence, self-regulation, anger management, and healthy social interaction. Students develop strength and flexibility while exploring responsible uses of power.
TEENAGERS
Teenagers from the age of approximately 13 (and older children who have attended several semesters
of the Peaceful Warrior classes), will have the opportunity to attend the adult basic classes when they are ready.
Additional Information
The first class is free so your child can try it out and see if s/he enjoys it. Please have your child wear sweat pants and a t-shirt to class so they can freely and comfortably move. Please no shorts or jeans.
